Log Cabin Quilt Blocks - 100 Variations

  • The Batsford Gallery 268 Hackney Rd England, E2 7SJ United Kingdom (map)

Celebrating the publication of Log Cabin Quilt Blocks by Batsford, this exhibition brings together the textile work of artist Catherine-Marie Longtin, presenting works featured in the book alongside a selection of additional pieces.

For over a century and a half, the log cabin block has been a foundation of patchwork quilting. Built from a simple idea — strips of fabric sewn around a central square — it offers seemingly endless possibilities for variation, transformation and play. In Longtin’s hands, this traditional form becomes a rich and contemporary language of colour, geometry, material and texture.

The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience Longtin’s work beyond the pages of the book: to encounter the scale, texture and intricate construction of the pieces at first hand, and to discover the relationships between individual blocks and larger compositions. Alongside traditional approaches, Longtin explores three- and four-sided blocks, courthouse steps, quarter circles, rectangles and polygons, as well as double strips, cornerstones and foundation piecing to create unexpected graphic and textural effects.

Her sophisticated approach to colour and her use of less traditional patchwork materials, including linen, bring a distinctive contemporary character to the work. What begins as a simple arrangement of fabric strips becomes an exploration of rhythm, pattern, texture and possibility.

Bringing together works from Log Cabin Quilt Blocks and beyond, Log Cabin Quilt Blocks – 100 Variations celebrates both the enduring appeal of a classic quilting form and the remarkable range of possibilities it continues to offer.
